The Story of Hatley Castle
Hatley Castle is a National Historic Site, located on the grounds of Hatley Park and Royal Roads University in Vancouver Island, BC. Today's Hatley Park estate consists of 565 acres featuring hundreds of heritage trees and three showpiece formal gardens. The Castle was designed by Victorian architect Samuel Maclure and the surrounding gardens were planned by landscape artists Messrs. Brett and Hall, from Boston, Massachusetts.
Built in 1908 by James Dunsmuir, the Castle served as the Dunsmuir residence until it was purchased by the Dominion Government in 1940 to become a Naval Training Establishment. The Castle then served as a dormitory and mess hall from 1941-1943 for the cadets and staff officers at Royal Canadian Naval College. In 1968, the college was renamed the Royal Roads Military College. Today, Hatley Castle is the administrative centre of Royal Roads University.

This is the perfect location for a summer wedding. In case of rain, the wedding ceremony can be held under the Italian Garden loggia.
Quarterdeck Ballroom: located in the Grant Building, the Quarterdeck room, built in 1943, is one of Victoria's biggest reception venues, offering banquet seating for up to 250 guests. One of the best things about having your wedding at Stanley Parks Teahouse Restaurant is the amazing sunset and ocean views. I shot my first wedding at the Teahouse in 2011, and it is still one of my favourite venues for smaller and more intimate weddings.
Tips for getting married at Stanley Park Teahouse.
- Have your ceremony on the open space next to the Teahouse. The light here than at the Pointe, and your guests will be cooler because the area is shaded by some amazingly tall trees. There is also less on-lookers and random people stopping at your ceremony.
- Consider having a first look, so that you don't have to leave the area between the ceremony & reception. When you leave (via any transportation), you will have to circle around half of the park to get back, it wastes a lot of time.
- Definitely leave time for Sunset Husband & Wife portraits! This location has an amazing sunset and you want to take advantage of this.
The Conservatory Room
This room is with windows all around giving you a beautiful view of the forest and sunset views towards the ocean. You can seat 70 guests with traditional long banquet tables; or 100 people for a standing reception.
The Drawing Room
This room has a picturesque window facing the ocean views and sunset and can seat 50 guests with traditional long banquet tables.
This venue is best for Summer and early Fall weddings, as there is no indoor location for the ceremony, and no place that is under cover close by for bridal portraits.
If you're looking for a fairytale wedding venue look no further than Swaneset Bay Resort & Country Club. This 65,000 sq ft chateau style clubhouse is located in the middle of a beautifully landscaped golf course that is nothing short of an enchanted forest. The main ballroom can host up to 350 guests, and can be flipped between a ceremony and wedding reception.
You will receive world class service at Swaneset Bay Resort, from wedding day coordination to catering and service staff. You will see the different at Swaneset.
You can have your ceremony at one of four locations at Swaneset.
- The Grand Ballroom can host up to 200 guests, with beautiful 60ft ceilings and floor to ceiling windows.
- The Sunrise Room is just off the Grand Ballroom and has a beautiful fireplace as the focal point of the ceremony, it can host up to 175 guests
- The Garden Birch Terrace can host up to 175 guests, and is overlooking the beautiful Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows mountains.
- The Main Lawn is the ideal spot for a large outdoor wedding, it can host up to 280 guests and is over looking the Chalet clubhouse, mountain views and golf course.
This venue is perfect all year round for your wedding ceremony and reception. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor spaces allowing you to have Plan A, B & C covered just in case. It has lots of beautiful areas for bridal and family portraits in all weather as well.
Westwood Plateau Golf Club provides spectacular sweeping mountain and city views from it's two banquet rooms. The venue can host up to 250 guests for your wedding day, with top class menu and service staff. There is a wedding coordinator on staff to help you with your wedding day needs.
Westwood Plateau Golf has a beautiful outdoor ceremony location near the front gate of the club. It is surrounded by a beautifully manicured garden & lawn. This is also a beautiful spot for your bridal portraits. If it happens to rain on your wedding day Westwood Plateau Golf has a few rooms where you can move your ceremony inside and keep out of the rain.
There are two banquet rooms, one upstairs which is bigger and has a beautiful balcony overlooking the Port Coquitlam Mountains. A smaller downstairs banquet room with a terrace overlooking the golf course.
This is one of our favourite venues for wedding in the Vancouver area:
- it is a little out of the way it is more private.
- there is plenty of parking for every one of your guests
- the food is fantastic!
- the clubhouse is built so that you're enjoying the views of our city
- the sunsets over the trees so the banquet rooms do not heat up during the summer.
- the balcony and terrace is nice and shady during the evening and provides a nice spot of guests to mingle.
- they have lots of great spots for family photos, bridal portraits and more!
Whonnock Lake is a unique wedding venue as it's managed by the city of Maple Ridge Parks, Recreation & Culture. It is a beautifully renovated space with an outdoor ceremony site, and indoor space with giant windows looking onto the forest. There are lots of spots for bridal portraits and family photos throughout the park, and a long dock running into the lake with beautiful forest and mountain views beyond.
Tips for the wedding venue:
- there is no staff at this venue so you will have to hire everyone you need to help with your day. (I highly recommend a planner at this venue)
- the best time of year for this venue is late spring to early fall, you want to take advantage of the outdoor space for your ceremony so clear weather is best.
- remember that this is a public space, so there may be people on the dock during your wedding.
- don't forget the bug spray!
If you're looking for a venue that will stand out look no further than the Vancouver Club. Create a exquisite wedding experience for your guests in one of their amazing rooms. The Georgian Room is a stunning room with unforgettable details; beautiful fireplace that can be the showcase of your ceremony.
The Ballroom can fit 200 guests for a luxurious wedding reception. Transform this room into your dream wedding. It has amazing chandeliers, lighting and windows.
One of my favourite ceremony spots at the Vancouver Club is the grand Lobby. Beautiful floors, staircase coming down on both sides and beautiful lighting. When you exit your ceremony come right outside the beautiful historic building and enjoy a glass of bubbly.
This venue is amazing all year round because it has so many rooms and options, your ceremony and reception are both inside so you don't have to worry about the rain. It's very close to many beautiful place for bridal party photos.
If a beautiful lakeside location is high on your priority list, you may want to consider Hart House in Burnaby.
Great Venue Options
One thing you might love about this venue is your many location options. There are spaces for large parties as well as places for much smaller groups.
This option is available mid-May through the first weekend in October. Weddings take place on the lawn and are moved into the reception space during bad weather. With a large dance floor and draped ceilings with chandeliers, this is a great space for a warm weather reception. Heaters are also included for those days when the weather is a bit cooler. The Tent option is perfect for groups of up to 200 people.
If you want an outdoor wedding or reception, The Lawn is your perfect option. Large tables and chairs can be set-up for a sit-down meal. Your guests can enjoy the beautiful trees and natural beauty of the outdoors. Plus, this option is sure to provide excellent wedding photos.
The main dining room of the Hart House Restaurant can be rented out for your wedding celebration. You will have the entire dining room exclusively for your group. With room for up to 80 guests seated and 100 reception-style, this is a great option year-round. The restaurant's four fireplaces are sure to add a fun touch to your wedding and keep your guests warm when the weather is colder. During the summer months, rental of the restaurant includes access to a gorgeous patio.
The Rosedale Room
If your group is a little smaller, the Rosedale Room might be your perfect option. The windows overlook Deer Lake and the gorgeous fireplace is sure to keep your guests happy and warm, even if you get married in the winter. Using round tables, it can accommodate up to 64 people. With rectangular tables, it can seat up to 80 people.
The Lakeside Cottage
Of course, some couples just want a small, intimate ceremony. If that is the case for you, the Lakeside Cottage is a wonderful option. Located just a short distance from the main restaurant, the cottage also has a fireplace. It is perfect for groups of 10-32 people. Rental of the Lakeside Cottage also includes the use of the lawn for a reception.
While you can get married here year-round, summer is probably your best option. You can use both the indoor and outdoor space, and the weather is more likely to be nice. The Chapel at Queen Elizabeth Park is a beautiful contemporary space for your ceremony. It's surrounded by windows and has a beautiful open space towards the back. It's the perfect summer wedding ceremony spot. The landscaped area behind the ceremony space is perfect for family photos.
A few things to keep in mind if you're thinking of having your wedding here:
- The ceremony space is used several times per day so you are shuffled in and out fairly quickly.
- Parking can be an issue during the summer
- There will be several other bridal parties in the parking taking their wedding photos as well.
- It can get hot in the chapel, so having an early morning or late evening ceremony is ideal!
Estate 248, is an unexpected rustic venue at Poppy Estate Golf Course in Aldergrove. This unexpected venue has two beautiful ceremony locations, a beautiful outdoor site with a beautiful large tree and rustic barn wall; and a long barn indoor location on rainy days.
